Every community has a story, and in Centralia, those stories are being preserved one artifact, one photograph, and one memory at a time.

Spend just a few minutes visiting with Executive Director Marjorie Motley, and one thing quickly becomes clear: the Centralia Historical Society isn’t simply preserving artifacts. It’s preserving the people, places, and moments that have shaped our community for generations. Mrs. Motley has dedicated more than twenty years to that mission, serving as Executive Director since 2010, with many years of involvement before then, and her passion for sharing Centralia’s history is evident in every story she tells.

Housed inside the beautiful Queen Anne Victorian home built in 1904 by Dr. Robert Linwood Hope, the museum has a remarkable history of its own. The home was later purchased by Albert Bishop Chance and his family before serving as the Chance Company guest house. In 1974, the Chance Foundation donated the home to the Historical Society, creating a permanent place where Centralia’s history could be preserved and shared with future generations. Today, the museum is home to more than 12,000 artifacts, each representing a piece of the community’s story.

Visitors will find exhibits that appeal to history enthusiasts and curious minds alike. The Civil War exhibit and replica Massacre Train help tell the story of one of the most significant events in our area’s history, while the Chance Company exhibit highlights innovations that reached far beyond Centralia, including products used in military efforts, Antarctic expeditions, and even equipment that helped save Skylab II. Throughout the museum, antique furnishings, quilts, military uniforms, photographs, tools, school memorabilia, toys, and everyday household items offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who built the Centralia we know today.

Just outside the museum, visitors can experience another piece of that legacy. Inspired by Albert Bishop Chance’s travels around the world, Chance Gardens have welcomed guests since 1936 with winding stone pathways, waterfalls, streams, and peaceful spaces to slow down and enjoy nature. Adjacent to the museum, the Rose Garden blooms beautifully each season and serves as another reminder that history is something to be experienced, not simply remembered.

What makes the Historical Society so special isn’t simply the size of its collection. It’s the reminder that history is made by ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Every business, every family, every milestone and tradition has helped shape the community we know today, and preserving those stories allows future generations to understand the foundation they stand on.

Like many nonprofit organizations, the Centralia Historical Society depends on the people who care about this community. Volunteers help in countless ways, from greeting visitors and assisting with events to caring for the gardens and preserving local history. They also welcome new members and encourage anyone with historically significant photographs, documents, or artifacts to reach out. You don’t need to be a historian to make a difference.
